There are great many articles for which it is of vital importance that the surface hardness should be as high as possible and the wear resistance as great as practicable and that they should possess at the same time a fairly high impact strength, such articles include some kinds of gears, cams, eccentrics, wheels, etc.
Parts that are required to have a high corrosion resistance or high resistance to scaling at elevated temperatures may be manufactured either of acid resistant alloy steels or of a plain low carbon steel which is then subjected to an appropriate case hardening (chemical thermal) treatment to increase its resistance to corrosion or scaling.
To increase the surface hardness and wear resistance of machine parts the machine manufacturing industry employs carburising, nitriding, cyaniding treatments which are commonly termed as "case hardening processes".
Case hardening of steel consists in saturating the surface of a hard steel with carbon, nitrogen and certain alloying elements, such as aluminium, chromium, silicon. All these elements are diffused in the steel at elevated temperatures. the solubility of all these elements in iron increases with a rise of temperature. maximum solubility of carbon in alpha iron is about 0. 02% at 723°c whereas in gamma iron 0. 8% carbon can dissolve, and 2% at a temperature of 1130°c.
Carburising process with ashcarb-p-80 (pack carburising)
The object of carburising is to produce as hard a surface resistant to wear and other mechanical forces. It consists of saturating the surface layer of a steel article with carbon.
Articles subjected to carburising are usually manufactured of low carbon steels such as 0. 2 to 0. 25% of carbon contents. Carburising process should be adjusted so as to obtain carbon content of 0. 8 to 0. 9% and not more than 1%. with higher carbon content, the surface layer becomes very brittle because a coarse cementite net work is formed on it. In industry two methods of carburising are mainly used i. E. Pack carburising (with solid carburisers) and gas carburising (in contact with carburaceous gases). pack carburising :
Articles to be carburised are packed in close containers i. E. Pots or "boxes" completely surrounded with solid ashcarb-p-80. The packing operation requires care to ensure that sufficient compound is used to supply the carbon required. no parts, should contact the sides of tinpots. The distance between parts to be carburised as packed should be not less than 20 to 25 mm. The containers are covered after slightly tamping of carburising salt and all the openings are luted with clay in order to prevent the air from penetrating into the pot.
(Solvent base electrical part and contact cleaner)
Ektraklin-SP is specially formulated for cleaning a wide range of electrical components and electrical contacts. It contains solvents and surfactants to effectively remove oil, dirt, grease, moisture and foreign matter from various components without affecting the insulation. It is non-flammable and has a very low toxicity.
It is widely used for cleaning of motors, switches, cross bars, bin bars, contactors, generators, transformers, switchgears, circuit breakers, commutators, cables, coils, etc.
Method Of Application:
Ektraklin-SP can be used either by spray, dip or wipe. It is to be used directly without any dilution. However, if required, it can be diluted with Kerosene to lower the costs. Cleaning of coils, pipe-lines, etc. may be carried out by circulating Ektraklin-SP through them.
1. Always use in a well-ventilated area.
2. Keep away from open flames.
3. Cleaning by dip method should be done in M.S.tank with lid. Lid should be kept covered when not in use.
4. Wearing of PVC gloves and eye shields are advisable while handling this solution.

A low-cost chromate conversion process for aluminium and its alloys which produces a golden-yellow film with good corrosion-resistance and excellent paint adhesion properties is offered by Ashok Industry.ASHCROM-G70 manufactured by Ashok Industry is a liquid concentrate to be diluted with water for actual use. The process is very simple and easy to conduct as it does not require any current, temperature or expertise. The process is applied by simple immersion or spraying techniques and a golden-yellow chromate film is formed usually within 5 minutes. It’s good corrosion-resistance and paint adhesion properties make it ideal for use on air craft components, window profiles, radar equipment, etc. before painting or powder coating.
It is also used in the electronics industry, where corrosion resistance coupled with low contact resistivity is a major requirement. Thus ASHCROM-G70 provides a self-coloured, decorative, corrosion resistant finish on various aluminium processed parts, extrusion, castings and critical components.

Generally Hydrochloric acid is used for pickling of metals. If inhibitor is not added to the acid during pickling, then it will readily attack the base metals causing heavy metal loss and sometimes even causing embrittlement of metals.

Wherever water or traces of water remain on metal surfaces, rust will start to appear usually within a few hours. Hence, to prevent this, 1% to 3% of COROBIT-ARP must be added to water so that it will give short term protection of 5 to 15 days.
COROBIT-ARP is widely used wherever water testing of pumps, valves, heat-exchangers and other pressure vessels is required.
Another use of COROBIT-ARP is after acid pickling of ferrous pipes, tubes, plates, sheets, channels and various other profiles. After pickling and subsequent water rinsing they are dipped in a 2 – 3% water solution of COROBIT-ARP to avoid flash rusting and give protection of about one week.
COROBIT-ARP is available in two Standard Packing of 10 kgs and 50 kgs.

(anti-carburising paste for gas carburisation)
Anticarb-psl is specially compounded for selective carburisation of metal surfaces as the paste protects some surface areas which are not to be carburised. Selective carburisation is carried out on surfaces where the wear resistance is necessary on certain areas with high ductility on other areas. It provides a better compromise of a hard abrasive resistant surface associated with highly ductile zone.
Anticarb-psl is used for selective carburisation of various metallic parts such as diesel engine components, crane-shafts, gears, bearings, threaded parts, cutting tools, defence components, etc.
Method of application :
Anticarb-psl is a paste which can be applied either by brush, spray or dipping. Water may be used for thinning. Excessive thick coatings should be avoided as it is not only uneconomical but coatings are also prone to cracking. On an average a coating thickness of 0. 5-1 mm is most effective.
After application, the parts should be left to dry by suspending in a well ventilated area, preferably in a warm atmosphere. Drying time will vary from 30-60 minutes, and is dependent on the temperature of part and atmosphere. Drying time will also depend on the thickness of the coating.
After the paste is completely dry, the parts should be put in the furnace. Care should be taken at all times to prevent any damage to the coating.
Coating removal :
The best method for removing residual coating after heat treatment is by mechanical action either by wire brushing, sand blasting or manual scraping. Most of the coating however, may get dislodged at the quenching stage itself. High-pressure jetting of a caustic soda solution also facilitates easy removal of the residual coating.
1. Always keep the containers tightly closed when not in use.
2. Should the paste get dry in the container, a little water should be added and mixed well.
3. If thinner consistency or coatings are desired then water may be used as a diluent.
4. Cleaning of hands, brushes, etc. Should be done with soap and warm water.

( Multi Metal cleaner cum degreaser )
ASFOCLEAN-AD-20 is an alkaline liquid chemical consisting of surfactants, dispersants and corrosion inhibitors. It is widely used for removal of soils, oils, cutting fluids, stamping, buffing and drawing compounds from ferrous as well as non-ferrous metal surfaces. ASFOCLEAN-AD-20 is easily soluble in water at all proportions and is very safe to use as it does not contain any chlorinated solvents, phenols, chromates, nitrites or cresols.
ASFOCLEAN-AD-20 can be used by wipe, immersion or spray in various types of cleaning equipments such as tumblers, vibrators, agitators, power washers, steam cleaners, immersion or agitated tanks, ultrasonic or vapour cleaners etc. Since ASFOCLEAN-AD-20 contains corrosion inhibitors, no rinse is required after cleaning hence it cleans and protects simultaneously. Protection period may range from one to four weeks depending on operating parameters and indoor conditions.
1. For degreasing and cleaning of ferrous parts and components prior to phosphating, blackening, plating etc.
2. For cleaning of multi-metal assemblies.
3. For removal of various contaminants such as oils, grease, etc. from painted as well as non-painted surfaces.
A) Immersion process for metals :-
Depending on the type and amount of soils present on the metal surface the following guideline should be followed:-

ASFOCLEAN-390 is a special deburring compound specially suited for all kinds of steels and hardened steels. It is not recommended for non-ferrous metals. When used in vibrators, agitators, tumblers etc. it will remove all kind of scales, rust, burr and other loose deposits producing a very clean and smooth even surface.
For cleaning, deburring, derusting and descaling of all kind of steel components when used in any agitated equipments along with a suitable media.
1) Add 5-10% of ASFOCLEAN-390 based on the water added to the tank of the vibrator/tumbler etc.
2) Run the equipment for a time predetermined based on experience/trials depending on the type of operation. Regular addition of chemical may have to be made for longer operation cycle.
3) Rinse tumble the components with fresh water.
4) Dip them in a suitable rust preventive like ASFOSIL-DW80 or ASFOSIL-DW depending on the desired period of protection.
SAFETY PRECAUTION :
1. ASFOCLEAN-390 should have always with PVC/Rubber gloves. Use of apron is recommended.
2. Splashes or Splatters on skin or eyes should be flushed off with plenty of fresh water. Consult physician for further treatment.

(Alkaline cleaner for ferrous metals and their alloys)
ASFOCLEAN-A is an alkaline liquid cleaner used for removing medium to light duty grease, oil, dirt, etc. from ferrous metals and their alloys. It is easily soluble in water and has excellent emulsifying and penetrating properties. However it can also be used for non-ferrous metals at lower concentrations with caution.
It is used to clean ferrous metals prior to phosphating, blackening and electroplating by immersion process. It is also used for cleaning large sheets and parts by swab or wipe at room temperature. It is also very effective in cleaning ferrous parts or components in ultrasonic cleaning machines and for cleaning and degreasing of pipelines, coils, etc. by circulation.
A) By hot immersion:
The following guideline should be followed depending on the degree of contamination:-
5% - 10%
B) By cold wipe:
The surface should be cleaned by wiping or swabbing it with a clean rag or cotton waste soaked in a 10-30% solution of ASFOCLEAN-A.
C) By ultrasonic cleaning:
The following guideline should be followed depending on degree of contamination:-
3% - 15%
Room Temp.- 80°C
D) By circulation:
Circulation inside pipelines is carried out using a pump. The following guideline should be followed.
3% - 10%
A 5% - 10% solution of Asfoclean-B with water is to be prepared in a container and parts/components that are to be cleaned are immersed in this solution. Heating of this solution will accelerate the degreasing process. Asfoclean-B degreaser can be used before plating, zinc phosphating, chromating, galvanizing, etc. It is available in two Packing of 10 kgs and 50 kgs.

SCALGUN-A is an aqueous acidic mixture, soluble in varying proportions with water. It is a very effective degreaser, etcher and desmutter for Aluminium surfaces. It does all these three functions in one operation.
SCALGUN-A is used at low temperatures and low concentrations and does not give rise to scale or sludge nor does it generate fumes in working environment.
A uniform matt finish is produced over a wide concentration range with a low level of metal removal.
SCALGUN-A is most suitable for pre-treatments before Chromatising as it performs three functions simultaneously mainly that of degreasing, etching and desmutting. Chromate coatings thus produced after pretreatment with SCALGUN-A are uniform and adherent.
SCALGUN-A is most suitable by dipping process. It is to be used in Plastic tank or Container.
The following parameters should be followed. Exact parameters should be set after trials.

v/v = Volume by Volume, R.T.= Room Temperature.
CONTROL & MAINTENANCE :
1) Fresh addition of SCALGUN-A should be made daily to maintain strength of solution by titration procedure.
2) Fresh bath should be prepared only when there is excess build-up of soils from heavily oiled surfaces, or when normal additions does not restore original rate.
3) Oil floating on top should be skimmed off daily.
4) Solution should be desludged / filtered once every 3-4 weeks.
5) Stir/Agitate the solution everyday before starting to process.
1) Avoid contact with skin, eyes & clothing.
2) Protective clothing such as PVC/Rubber gloves, eye goggles and aprons should be worn while handling or working with SCALGUN-A.
3) For Splashes/Splatters on eyes or skin wash with fresh water continuously for 1 minute then apply calcium gluconate gel and massage into affected area. Consult physician if necessary.
